What a veterinary practice generates

A small animal practice runs consults, surgery and dispensing under one roof, which means vaccination and draw sharps, blades and suture needles from surgery, saturated dressings, and expired drug stock, all from a building the size of a shop.

The rules behind the containers

Animal waste is treated differently from state to state, and the sharps are the part nobody disputes.

  • Sharps are sharps

    Whatever the patient species, used needles and blades go in a puncture-resistant container and leave by a compliant route.

  • State rules vary

    Alabama works to ADEM Division 335-17 and Florida to Chapter 64E-16, and each treats animal-derived waste in its own way. Check the current text for your state.

  • Controlled drugs are separate

    Scheduled veterinary medication is destroyed under DEA rules, 21 CFR 1317, not through this service.

  • Your staff are covered

    Employees with reasonably anticipated exposure to blood fall under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030.

Is mail-back enough for a small animal practice?

For most single-site clinics, yes, at 0 to 50 lbs a month. Systems run from 1 quart to 28 gallons.

Can you take animal carcasses or tissue?

No. Animal carcass and pathological waste is handled under separate state provisions and needs a vendor set up for it. We collect sharps, regulated medical waste and pharmaceutical waste.

What about expired veterinary drugs?

Non-controlled expired stock goes under pharmaceutical waste disposal. Controlled veterinary drugs follow the DEA route instead.

Is there a contract?
