Medical waste disposal for funeral homes

Funeral homes are one of the six generator types BioMed was set up for. The preparation room produces regulated waste on a schedule nobody controls, and it has to leave the building by a route that stands up to inspection.

What a preparation room generates

The work of the prep room

Embalming produces sharps and saturated material in roughly equal measure: trocars, needles, suture material and blades on one side; gowns, gloves, drapes and absorbent material on the other.

Embalming chemicals are a separate matter. Formaldehyde-based fluid and its residues are a chemical waste stream with its own rules, and BioMed does not collect it. We take the regulated medical waste, and we will say plainly where our service stops.

  • Trocars and needles Trocars, injection and suture needles from the preparation room.
  • Blades and instruments Single-use blades and disposable instruments.
  • Saturated material Gowns, gloves, drapes and absorbent material from preparation.
  • Not collected here Embalming chemicals and formaldehyde residues, which are a chemical waste stream.

What applies to you

The rules behind the containers

OSHA is the day-to-day rule here, and formaldehyde has a standard entirely of its own.

  • Bloodborne pathogens

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 covers embalmers and anyone else with reasonably anticipated exposure.

  • Formaldehyde, separately

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1048 governs formaldehyde exposure, monitoring and training in the preparation room. It is a different rule from the waste one.

  • Permitted transport

ADEM permits medical waste transport in Alabama; Florida registers transporters under Chapter 64E-16.

  • Proof of destruction

A manifest for every pickup and proof that the waste was legally destroyed.

A summary for orientation, not legal advice. Check the current rule with the agency, or call the office in Mobile, AL.

Two ways to dispose

Pickup or mail-back

It comes down to how much you make. Steady volume suits a truck on a schedule. An office that fills a few containers a month can skip the truck and mail them back.

Scheduled pickup

For clinics, practices and facilities with steady volume

  • Containers and bags supplied for each waste stream
  • Routine or flexible pickups, adjusted when your volume changes
  • Collected by trained, experienced personnel
  • Waste manifest and proof of legal destruction every time
  • Local across South Alabama, South Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle, from our Mobile, AL office

Mail-back

For small quantity generators, 0 to 50 lbs a month

  • Systems from 1 quart to 28 gallons
  • Prepaid return box and a pre-filled manifest
  • Email tracking from pickup to destruction
  • Electronic certificate of disposal
  • No contracts, no minimums, no fuel surcharges

A schedule around unpredictable work

You cannot forecast a week's cases, so the interval has to have slack in it.

Questions

Funeral Homes & Embalming, answered

Something we did not cover? The office that serves you can answer it.

Mobile, AL(251) 300-6143

Does BioMed serve funeral homes?

Yes. Funeral homes are one of the generator types the service was built for, alongside physicians, dentists, clinics, veterinary practices and tattoo studios.

Do you take embalming fluid or chemical waste?

No. Formaldehyde-based fluid and its residues are a chemical waste stream with their own rules and need a vendor set up for them. We collect the regulated medical waste.

How often would you collect?

On a routine or flexible schedule. Because case volume is unpredictable, we usually set an interval with slack in it and adjust from there.

Can a small funeral home use mail-back?

Yes, under 50 lbs a month. Larger systems take full, sealed sharps containers and red bags.

What documentation do we keep?

A waste manifest and proof of legal waste destruction.
