What the practice generates

Surgery days and injectable days

On a surgery day it looks like an ASC: blades, suture needles, drapes, gowns, tubing and saturated dressings, all produced in concentrated bursts around each case.

On an injectables day it looks like a med spa: fine-gauge needles and cannulas, used vials and syringes from neuromodulators and fillers. Small in weight, large in count, and every one of them a regulated sharp.

The rules behind the containers

The surgical side pulls in transport and storage rules; the injectable side is where practices most often get it wrong.

  • Bloodborne pathogens

    OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 covers containers, labeling, PPE and the exposure control plan.

  • A used filler needle is a sharp

    Cosmetic does not mean unregulated. Needles and cannulas go into a puncture-resistant container, not a lined bin.

  • Packed for the road

    Regulated medical waste travels under DOT rules, 49 CFR, in closed and marked packaging.

  • Storage limits apply

    Florida caps on-site storage at 30 days. Alabama works to ADEM Division 335-17.

Do cosmetic injectable needles need a sharps container?

Yes. A used needle or cannula is a regulated sharp regardless of what was injected, and goes into a puncture-resistant container at the point of use.
