What an agency generates

Found sharps and scene material

Most of it arrives unexpectedly. A needle in a pocket during a search, a container of sharps recovered from a vehicle, or contaminated material from a scene, none of it produced by the agency and all of it now the agency's responsibility.

What do officers do with a needle found in a search?

It goes into a puncture-resistant container at the location where it is processed, and leaves through a compliant disposal route. Having a container in booking and evidence is the practical answer.

Are police officers covered by OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard?

Employees with reasonably anticipated exposure to blood are covered, which in practice includes officers who search, process and give first aid.
