What we collect here, and from whom

Escambia County issues the permit, and it issues a lot of them. A facility that generates biomedical waste applies annually to the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County, and with the number of practices packed into this city the department sees more of these than almost any other in the Panhandle.

What that means for a Pensacola practice is that the paperwork is routine and the pickup interval is the part to think about. Nothing may sit at the generating facility for more than thirty days, whatever the fill level, and a busy specialist practice will hit a container limit long before it hits the calendar.

BioMed works from one office, at 1909 Brookdale Drive West in Mobile, AL, and the Panhandle is inside the local pickup area run from it. Pensacola is in Escambia County, inside the local pickup area. See the rest of the Florida Panhandle, or contact us and the Mobile office will reply.

  • Specialist and surgical practices Blades, suture needles and procedure sharps across many rooms.
  • Dental and orthodontic offices Needles, wire and blades from a dense cluster of practices, amalgam separate.
  • Labs, dialysis and infusion Specimen tubes, access needles, bloodlines and saturated dressings.
  • Med spas and wellness clinics Fine-gauge needles, cannulas and glass ampoules.

Florida rules

What Florida asks of you

Florida calls it biomedical waste and runs it through Chapter 64E-16 of the Florida Administrative Code. A short guide, for orientation.

  • A permit from your county

Facilities that generate biomedical waste apply for an annual permit to the county health department where the business sits. Here that is the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County.

  • The 25-pound exemption

A facility that can document less than 25 lbs in every 30-day period over the previous 12 months can qualify for an exemption from the permit. The rest of the rule still applies.

  • 30 days on site

Biomedical waste may not be stored at the generating facility for more than 30 days, so the pickup schedule has to keep up.

  • A plan and trained staff

Facilities keep a written biomedical waste operating plan. Staff are trained before they handle the waste and take a refresher every year.

Two ways to dispose

Pickup or mail-back

It comes down to how much you make. Steady volume suits a truck on a schedule. An office that fills a few containers a month can skip the truck and mail them back.

Scheduled pickup

For clinics, practices and facilities with steady volume

  • Containers and bags supplied for each waste stream
  • Routine or flexible pickups, adjusted when your volume changes
  • Collected by trained, experienced personnel
  • Waste manifest and proof of legal destruction every time
  • Local across South Alabama, South Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle, from our Mobile, AL office

Mail-back

For small quantity generators, 0 to 50 lbs a month

  • Systems from 1 quart to 28 gallons
  • Prepaid return box and a pre-filled manifest
  • Email tracking from pickup to destruction
  • Electronic certificate of disposal
  • No contracts, no minimums, no fuel surcharges
