Florida rules
Florida calls it biomedical waste, and the Florida Department of Health regulates it under Chapter 64E-16 of the Florida Administrative Code. A short guide, for orientation.
Facilities that generate biomedical waste apply for an annual permit to the county health department where the business is located. In Pensacola, that is the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County.
A facility that can document less than 25 lbs of biomedical waste in every 30-day period over the previous 12 months can qualify for an exemption from the permit. The rest of the rule still applies.
Biomedical waste may not be stored at the generating facility for more than 30 days, so the pickup schedule has to keep up.
Facilities keep a written biomedical waste operating plan. Staff are trained before they handle the waste and take a refresher every year.
